Prof. Nicholas Stergiou Hosting Nonlinear Analysis Workshop at The University of Newcastle This February

November 13, 2018

Nonlinear Analysis Workshop: February 4th – February 6th, 2019

The University of Newcastle, Australia

Presented by Professor Nicholas Stergiou from the University of Omaha, Nebraska, USA

General:
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce research scientists, clinicians, and students to a variety of nonlinear methods for the analysis of biological time series data. Participants will learn how to use nonlinear methods to analyze biological data by first learning about the underlying mathematics of each nonlinear method in a simple and friendly fashion. Instructors will use class discussions to facilitate understanding of the material covered in the lectures. Instructors will use class discussions to facilitate understanding of the material covered in the lectures. This workshop is an introduction to nonlinear analysis methods; participants with varied backgrounds are welcomed. This popular workshop regularly runs in Omaha Nebraska and has been presented around the globe. We are fortunate to be able to host Professor Stergiou in Newcastle Australia in February of 2019.

Workshop Overview:
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the basic concepts in nonlinear dynamics and chaos.

  2. Describe what each nonlinear method measures.

  3. Understand the basic mathematical algorithm behind each nonlinear method.

  4. Understand parameter selection for each nonlinear analysis method.

  5. Understand how to apply different nonlinear methods to biological time series data.

  6. Know which nonlinear methods are used to analyze biological time series data.

  7. Understand the uses and applications of nonlinear analysis.

  8. Understand limitations of nonlinear methods.

  9. Apply nonlinear analysis in professional settings.

Across the 3 days, participants will:

-Be introduced to dynamical systems

-Discuss the basis of fractals, what they are, and how they may be analyzed. Several techniques will be introduced, including the advantages or shortcomings of the different algorithms.

-Be introduced to the concept of state space reconstruction based on Taken's theorem. In addition, the mathematical basis of Lyapunov exponent will be introduced, as well as two algorithms for its calculation for biological time series, Wolf's and Rosenstein's.

-Discuss entropy, the mathematical basis of entropy, and why it has been "approximated" for use in biology. Different algorithms will be discussed including: approximate, sample, and symbolic. In addition, several algorithms of surrogation analysis

Fee/Registration:
Class size will be limited to ensure an effective learning experience for all participants. The course fees (early bird rates) are $750 AUD for professionals and $500 for graduate students (additional discounts available for University of Newcastle staff and students). Payment must be made online via our website (https://payments.newcastle.edu.au/OneStopWeb/SHSS000006). Registration cost includes lunch and tea breaks on the University of Newcastle City Campus each day of the workshop, and all workshop materials.
